Two of my video game industry friends and I spent the last year and a half putting this book together. The three of us stayed up late on more nights and weekends reading and talking about the submissions, editing the stories we chose, and designing the layout of the book than any of us can keep track of. It was a labor of love from start to finish.

The twenty-four short stories in this book all somehow deal with losing one’s sense of home:

…a sleep study gone wrong…

…a house that randomly swaps your body parts with someone (or something) else’s…

…a pair of ghostly baby shoes that won’t leave a grieving father alone…

…a real estate flipper who buys more than he bargained for…

…a halfway house haunted by an unorthodox kind of ghost…

These are just few snippets of the terrifying and heart-wrenching tales in Under the Stairs. Some of these stories are among my favorite short stories ever written.

And, for anyone who follows my fiction, I have a new story in this book as well – technically two, but one is more of an easter egg. I also did all of the interior illustrations by hand with pen and ink, as well as the interior layout. Vincent painted the front and back covers.

The audiobook version is already recorded, narrated by Dean Liapis and Hilary Halpern, and will be on Audible in about two weeks (I am still editing the sound files).

Yes, it was a totally DIY project. A little rough around the edges? Probably. Did any of us know what we were doing when we started? Definitely not. Was pretty much all of what binds these incredible stories accomplished through trial and shit tons of error? As Jud Crandall would say, “Hu’yah,” it was.
